A Greener Wedding

January 2, 2011

You don’t have to abide by any strict guidelines to make your day greener, each and every way helps. Eco-friendly options can even be less expensive than traditional choices. Here are just a few ideas…

+ Use recycled or tree-free paper for your save-the-dates, invitations, place cards, menus, annoucements and other stationary. Many vendors even offer stationary printed with soy or vegetable based inks.

+ Consider online correspondence and RSVP through your wedding website to cut back on paper.

+ Use recycled, upcycled, used, and/or vintage items. A pre-worn gown, borrowed accessories, vintage decor are great choices and smart ways to save.

+ Look for resuable items as centerpieces, such as potted plants that guests may take home. Instead of paraffin candles, opt for beeswax or soy candles.

+ Rent real dishware, glassware and linens instead of disposables.

+ Make a donation to charity instead of giving favors to your guests. Some charitable organizations will even provide you with a card or a small pin that you can give to guests.

+ Support local and/or organic farmers. Seek out locally-sourced seasonal or organic flowers for table and cake decor. Ask your caterer about organic or locally-sourced food options or even a vegetarian entree (meatless meals have less environmental impact). Choose local or organic wines, liquors and beers for your bar.

+ Look for “Made in the USA”. Domestic goods eliminate the emissions and other environmental costs associated with overseas transport.

+ Keep it natural. Natural materials include biotic materials, such as wood and natural fibers (cotton, silk, linen), and inorganic materials including stone, metal, and clay. Natural makeup and hair products that are non-toxic are good for your body and good for the Earth.

Its easy to be green. If you have any questions or need referrals to green vendors, I would be happy to assist.
