Together Session + Favorites

September 3, 2011

The session was an amazing mix of romance, fun and incredible beauty. We started at the very cool authentic telephone booth from England, to which I’m so very appreciative it’s owner came by and asked if we wanted it opened (yeah!) and then we strolled around town for a bit and headed to a field for sunset. It was cloudy and cool, but near the end the clouds started to break and the sky filled with beautiful tones of blue and pink. When the bride first told me how much she wanted photos in the red phone booth, in the alley, and in a field, I really wanted to fulfill those dreams for her. I feel like we did, and then some. I may be biased, but these images are incomparable to those from their wedding day. We just couldn’t fit creative couple portraits into their wedding day and so we opted to do another session after they got back from their honeymoon. I really wanted to have the session be focused on them as a couple, experiencing the gift they are to one another.

So, what is a Together Session exactly? It’s my version of a… day-after, bridal, rock-the-dress, trash-the-dress, type of session. There will certainly be a lot of staring, snuggling, kissing and smiling involved. (Easy stuff, right?) With adding this session onto a wedding package (or even years later) there isn’t the pressure of having to fit in enough time before the ceremony or squeeze a few shots in before heading off to the reception. Of course we take the formal portraits on the wedding day, that’s a must, but these are just different.

Meleah and Luke, it was meant to be.  Their lives had been intertwined before they had even met one another. A bit of online magic brought them together and they are most certainly a perfect match. When I first met them for an engagement session we had such a great time that when I got an email asking if I would be their wedding photographer I was over-the-moon…of course! The way that Meleah & Luke love each other is inspirational, and I am a richer person for having been witness to the way they love each other. I am so very proud that I was invited to be part of their day.

Meleah and her mom designed the day to be a traditional church and reception to follow wedding with a loose tuscan feel to it. Everything came together perfectly and the pop of purple for the bridesmaids dresses and flowers was both beautiful and fun. Their extraordinary family is a true blessing to their relationship and without a doubt was a major part of their day, with so many siblings (Meleah and her brothers, Luke with his sisters and brother) there were hugs and kisses…and of course a little silliness. The bride is simply gorgeous and its undeniable how a gentleman in uniform is handsome wrapped in a bow (I was talking about the groom in particular here, but Meleah’s Dad and brothers were also donning uniforms and looking very handsome themselves.) Their wonderfully sweet and memorable ceremony took place in a church and having the couple look out onto their fabulous friends and family during the ceremony I think is brilliant. After a traditional unity lighting, there was the kiss and then the bride and groom ran down the aisle and disappeared for a few moments just to themselves.

At the reception it was all about the dancing. The father/daughter dance started very sweet and traditionally, but after a “glitch” (wink, wink), it turned to rock’n'roll and air guitar – how cool is that?!? Definitely set the tone for the rest of the evening. There was twirling, and more twirling during a dance with her brother (sooo sweet)…and some very cool dance moves by the groom. I LOVED that so many people on the dance floor were not only movin’ and a groovin’ but singing along too. Though her grandparents definitely caught all the attention on the dance floor and when the bride and groom presented them with a bouquet, they had the biggest smiles to show their appreciation. With her brother DJ-ing he kept the music going throughout the evening, and even got a request from the flower girl who really only wanted all the attention. At the end there were bubbles and the groom swept his bride off her feet and again ran out the door and drove away.

And in case you were wondering about a full moon on your wedding day/night (I know I was, I had to Google it) I found “To be lucky, marry during the full moon.”  I already know these two are lucky, they found each other! Many wonderful adventures await you in England, I know your families will miss you terribly, thank goodness for Skype! Hoping you’ll come back to visit and I’ll get to see some gorgeous babies one day :)

Many thanks to my assistant/second shooter Shannon for your time and talent, you are awesome and I am loving your fisheye lens shots…they were perfect for this wedding and this couple especially, you rock!

What an evening…full of love, laughter and some serious amazingness. *swoon*

Wedding Portrait after the Honeymoon

They’re hitched! A sneak peek of today’s country-style wedding…

A Country Wedding in Poulsbo

I adore this couple so much, they are such sweet and caring people (as are their incredible families). I’m so excited to see them again when they are back from their honeymoon, until then, here’s two from today!

I’m not sure how many times I said “Wow” while at Trophy Lake, but it was probably over a hundred. As I was assisting/second shooting for my friend Mindy Capps I was truly taken aback by how many gorgeous spots there were for photo opportunities. We did have a pretty amazing day weather-wise, but the scenery that Trophy Lake offers is simply incredible. The landscaping is beautiful, with natural hillsides, fields and trees alongside impeccable golf greens. There is even a waterfall feature which was a perfect backdrop for portraits. The reception site for this wedding was also outdoors, it’s a spacious covered area, and the sides of it are down for the ceremony and then were brought up for the reception, to allow beautiful natural light to fill the space. An all-natural light ceremony and reception sites are my absolute favorite and with the spectacular scenery, this is a fantastic wedding venue.

The main building has an area for getting ready and an area for bridal party members or guests to grab a snack and relax either indoor or outdoor before and during the event. Trista (the go-to gal for the wedding) and the staff are so kind, courteous and seem to be around every time you need them. She even let me have use of a golf cart to get around when needed, which was a huge timesaver and I can now add cart-driving experience to my list of skills.

For this wedding they had a six-tier wedding cake with a simple dotted design that reminded me of strands of elegant pearls with beautifully crafted flowers on top…it was perfection! They had these sugar cookie favors in the shape of hearts created just for them with the bride & groom’s name and wedding date for all of their guests. There were spheres of white roses and rose petals along the aisle for the ceremony and the table flowers and bouquets were so lush, fresh, and gorgeous. The bride’s Maggie Sottero gown (from Benita’s) was absolutely stunning. It’s light ivory color was perfect for a sunny day; some dresses can appear a bit blue in the sun, but this was beautiful in every light. They had DJ Z keep the dance floor full and everyone showed off a move or two. I hope you enjoy a glimpse of this great venue and their wonderful wedding day.

When you choose to have your wedding on the Kitsap Peninsula you might be inclined to have a waterfront wedding. The Kitsap Conference Center does not disappoint. Especially if you have family and friends making it over from Seattle, the ferry terminal is conveniently right there for them to walk from the ferry to the ceremony. It’s a lovely spot with the water as a backdrop for your vows and several areas for photo opportunities. The fountains of course are a favorite and the landscaping around is beautiful, they have interesting rock sculptures which make for dramatic or fun photos as well. Nearby they have a great set of stairs, other fountains, and perfect vantage points for enjoying the waterfront.

On this particular day in June there were so many flowers in bloom and the weather was absolutely wonderful, hence the people in the background enjoying the cool water of the fountain park. I had the pleasure of second-shooting for Katie of AmandaK Photography and we took advantage of the fantastic features that the Kitsap Conference Center and Bremerton waterfront offer. The bride and groom were so sweet and the bridal party was so much fun. The ceremony was right there on the waterfront and as the beautiful bride walked down the stairs and past the fountains, you could just see everyone’s face (including wedding-gaukers) light up. The reception area was inside the conference center and rockin’ for awhile. As I left I admit I wished the reception was outside on such a beautiful day…I love all natural light weddings and the sunset that day was amazing.

Both bride & groom packed their heavy pair of XtraTuf brown & beige rubber boots and made their way from Alaska to Washington to tie up the last details for their wedding day. You see, I had never met the bride and groom until a week before their wedding, though I’d exchanged calls and emails with Trisha for months. By the time I met them I already knew what they looked like and seen details of their attire…it was just like meeting up with a friend you just hadn’t seen in awhile. They make me smile and on their wedding day, they even made me cry.

Though Trisha is from the Kitsap Peninsula, she went to Alaska in 2008 for a Summer adventure and ended up with more of an adventure than she expected. After meeting Mike they took a fishing trip and exchanged banter back and forth for several months. Trisha decided to follow her heart and moved there. Having just visited Alaska myself, days after their wedding in fact, its truly an incredible part of the country with spectacular views that will take your breath away.

Trisha had to plan things from Alaska, and I must say, she did an amazing job. The location she chose for the ceremony and reception was Island Lake Park in Poulsbo. She picked a palette of dark brown, oranges, yellows, fuchsia and purple with a lovebird theme. There were so many special handmade details, from the invitations to the pillow for the rings. Tables with brown burlap were accented with mason jars full of bright beautiful flowers. Even some of the delicious cupcakes from Bella Bella had candies on top which looked like little eggs. Each element was created and customized just for them…every one of them perfect.

Because this is a nearly complete story of their day, there are quite a lot of photos to share, enjoy!

I met up with Trisha at Seaport Salon & Spa in Silverdale to take a few photos of her having her make-up applied and then it was off to the Oxford Suites to catch the bride and groom getting ready and seeing each other for the “first look”.

During family portraits there were laughs when I asked two of her brothers to kiss her cheeks. C’mon how cute is that?!  Then when the groom’s Mom looked at her son, now married, they exchanged happy tears…and it happened…my eyes welled. I was so caught up in catching the emotion they were sharing that I started to cry. It was such a sweet moment that even now when I look at that photo I just feel honored to have been there.

During the reception it had started to rain, and by departure time it was pouring, not only rain, but birdseed. Thank you Trisha & Michael for celebrating your day with me and I know many new adventures await in Alaska.

Also – thank you so much Katie, for your time and talent as my second shooter and assistant for the day…your images complete their story.

Moment to Moment

May 15, 2011

Although it may be true that it only takes “one shot” I sure wouldn’t want to miss that next moment…which is why you might hear my camera “click-click-click” instead of just “click”. Though I may love this first image, they may love the next even more because it will remind them of what her groom whispered to her that made her laugh – every time they look at it.

It’s easy to see what this couple had on their wedding day…a little rain and a lot of love. ♥
