A Name Behind the Name

March 30, 2010

Today I saw another post about how as a photographer, you are hiring a person for their talent and skill, which is why many photographers use their name for their business…”John Smith Photography”. Photography is a very personal thing, and when you hire a professional photographer you are hiring a person with a unique style, talent, and skill.

I considered doing the same…Laura Zander Photography…but to me, it was just a name. My last name is from my husband, but its not really “his” either…its actually his half-brothers dad’s name, and my husband has a different father..so it is kind of awkward and even a little confusing. Even though it is my legal name, I just wanted something with a little more personal meaning to me. I created a list of words..moments, capture, little, love, weddings, and so forth…but everything seemed taken, or overused, and I certainly didn’t want to confine myself to a specific genre of photography. Even though I want someone to hire me as a person for my creativity and style, I also want them to know that I am a business and a professional.

I had wracked my brain for weeks…and then I was shopping online… add to cart… add to cart… add to .. wait a sec… ADD TO HEART! In this internet-based society we shop online for just about everything, a quick click “Add to Cart” and its on the way to our door – so I thought for the moments of life, just a click of the camera and that memory is added to your heart. I was in love with the name, because it just had so much and so many meanings for me and to this day I still find new meanings in the name.

Black & White PhotographThis is my first entry into an I Heart Faces Photo Challenge…when I saw it was a Dramatic B&W challenge this week, I really wanted to enter this image. This is the original vertical version I shot during Brandon’s mock-wedding workshop at the Hotel Monaco in Portland.

I ♥ silhouettes and when I saw that the light from the window was also hitting the lampshade, I thought it would make for an interesting B&W conversion.

Thursday morning I woke up before the sun and headed to Hotel Monaco in downtown Portland, Oregon for a mini-workshop with Portland wedding photographer Brandon Perron. He set up what is generally referred to as a “mock-wedding”, a staged event that is styled and produced to give photographers (and vendor’s as well) an opportunity to really get creative.

Thank you for everything Brandon! And many thanks to the very talented vendors who did an AMAZING job – Champagne Wedding and Events, Blüm, West Coast Event Productions, White Rose Bakery, and a special thank you Rebeca & Jeremy for being such great models and assuming the identity of a non-married couple being followed by paparazzi…haha. Also, Lazaro bridal gown from Ania Collection and Grooms attire by the Mens Warehouse.

The Hotel Monaco in downtown Portland is pretty amazing. Its old-Hollywood exterior is complete with a bellman in a bowler hat which really sets the stage for a unique experience. When you walk in, the hotel’s style is truly an infusion of color, pattern, texture and amazing details. I’m not sure if it was the decor or the 7 other photographers I was with, but I just got a great creative vibe from the whole experience. The inspiring palette and romantic lighting was speaking my language!

Although I consider myself a natural light photographer, we were rained “in” and never stepped a foot outside the whole day (well until it was all over and I went out front to snap a shot of the HM sign). I think it challenged us all to get creative with utilizing existing indoor light and minimal additional lighting. This actually made the whole shoot feel more high-fashion and helped each of us to shine artistically. It was great to collaborate with other photographer’s to watch them set up a shot or a pose, take a few shots, compare camera settings and then try our own hat at a new pose or setting. There’s kind of an awkward feeling you get around a group of people and your first instinct is to sort of stand in the background and observe or maybe just be more shy than normal, I used to be that person! But photography is about your art – and Brandon was actually one to encourage me to break out of that shell. I love photography and I really enjoy shooting, meeting other photographers and talking “shop” or just chatting it up. Everyone brings something to the table…every one. So why not speak up? Why not try something different or add your two cents? And encourage it in others…just like Brandon did for me. (Hoping he’s not sorry he did that…hehe)

The whole environment Brandon created was in my opinion, well paced and perfect for practicing, learning, and even trying to fail as he encourages during a workshop. After a day of information and shooting, my brain was still processing everything as we said our goodbyes. Had to head back home to Silverdale and since I’m not big on driving, or directions, thankfully my husband came down with me and did the downtown thing during the day. On the way home I took a nap while he drove…I awoke when I heard our car’s GPS say “Make a U-turn” and I said something like “What’s going on? Are we lost?”. Obviously a stupid question. He had decided to stop at Farrelli’s in DuPont on the way home to grab a bite to eat…our favorite pizza place near Ft. Lewis and Madigan. That gave me a boost of energy after an exhausting day, so when we got home I went through my shots and did some editing. I envy how perfect Rebeca’s skin is, as I didn’t retouch these and she looks flawless.

To wrap this up and get to the good stuff – THE PICTURES – I’ll finish by saying that I had a great time, loved being able to stretch out my wings, learn some new things and meet some great people.

I have heard it time and time again…If only my own kids would look at the camera. Unfortunately many photographer’s kids have this same camera aversion…only to smile and take great pictures for OTHER people! My daughter will occasionally ham it up for me, but not as often as I’d like, and I don’t have too many with her and myself. After thinking about this and talking to my friend who is also a photographer, we decided to get together for a FUN day of taking photos of each others kids in hopes we could get some genuine smiles.

Then I thought, I wonder if this would be something other local photographer’s would want to do…a sort of Photo Playdate. So I guess I’m just throwing the idea out there for other photographer’s, not just in my area, but all over! Maybe suggest a Photo Playdate to a few fellow professional photographers…and have fun with it! My idea is that there’s no session/sitting fee and charge just for prints (or even offer a discount on prints). There are so many great things about this, here are just a few:

+ You get a chance to have your kids professionally photographed
+ You have the opportunity to try something new without the pressure of a paid client
+ Each photographer brings their own unique style to the play date and this can in turn be very inspirational
+ The kids get to meet each other and just play and have fun
+ The photographers get to meet each other and just play and have fun :)

A few recommendations if you decide to do this in your area. Make it known that no files will be exchanged. Each photographer has their unique editing style – so let go of creative control! After all you will be busy editing photos of your own. Have it be a no-obligation agreement…so you aren’t required to buy a minimum or even any. Keep in mind that if you don’t have a photographer buy your prints from the playdate you still were able to practice, have fun and hopefully have some great shots of your own kids. There is nothing to lose!

The goal here though is to have pictures of your own kids, so just put some extra $$ aside so you can support each other as photographers and have some great prints of your kids. Set some time aside in the beginning of the playdate to get a chance to meet each other, exchange business cards, take care of paperwork such as a model release, etc. Then pair up and have some fun shooting! I started a Facebook Page – Playdates for Photographers as a way of getting together and arranging events, discussions, etc.

Posing Class + Favorites

March 20, 2010

Today I attended a class along with some other local photographers in Port Angeles, Washington held by Ernst. While I had a lot of fun, I learned some great tips about lighting, posing seniors, marketing and photography that made me think of “my” photography in a different way. We had an indoor lighting/posing session and then took it outdoors (YAY natural light – my favorite!). I saw this one interesting brick wall and asked Ernst about how to pose someone if they were on it, he was happy to indulge my curiosity and try it out…of course that was my favorite shot I was able to get. Another was after he had posed her sitting at a nearby coffee shop and I just loved the softness of her hands, her subtle smile and her eyes were just amazing. Thank you so much Ernst!

Special Spring Offer

March 20, 2010

To celebrate the first day of Spring, I’d like to offer a special “Spring Break” so to speak.  Any standard session that takes place between March 20th (first day of Spring) and June 20th (first day of Summer) will receive $50.00 off the session fee. Your customized lifestyle portrait session will take place at a location of your choice as there are some really beautiful spots around the Kitsap Peninsula, especially with so much already in bloom.

Kitsap County Nature Photography

(This special offer expires June 20, 2010. To book your session please email me for available dates and mention this offer. Not valid with any other offer or towards prints, albums, keepsakes or previously booked sessions.)

Finally, Spring is almost upon us! Having lived in Arizona for over 15 years, I definitely have had my fill of sun. Yet now having lived in Kitsap County for almost 10 years, I can appreciate a beautiful sunny day once in a while. The new life that Spring brings is full of color, both soft pastels and vivid hues, and the cool breeze feels like a revitalizing breath of fresh air. Although sunny conditions are not necessarily considered optimal for photography, I loved the bright light and color palette of these photographs after the dark and gray Winter we had.

My very good friend and fellow photographer, Crystal of Crystal-Pixel Photography, asked me to do a portrait session of her. Between the frequent laughs and silly faces, I think we got some beautiful shots. I know its awkward being in front of the camera when you are so used to being behind it…so I think we were on extra-silly behavior to break the awkwardness. I am very grateful that she asked me to photograph her and even though the pressure is on when you photograph another photographer, she really made it easy on me! Thanks C – you totally rock dude!

I know that my clients will want to share their session images, after all that is one of the biggest reasons for having professional photographs taken. But did you know that photographs (both digital and printed) are protected by United States Copyright law? Unauthorized copying or duplication of images (including scanning photographs) is in violation of this law and affects a photographer’s ability to continue to produce high-quality work. When you have your photos professionally taken, the photographer still retains copyrights to these images and therefore, under no circumstances can you use the images for profit, commercial use, in competitions or for professional display (altered or not). But there are many ways to share your photos that do not violate this copyright.

Photographer’s Blog
Often photographers will post session sneak peeks or favorites on their blog. This is the quickest and easiest way to share your session images – just post a link to the photographer’s blog post in your email, Facebook, Twitter, or even your very own blog. Don’t forget to leave a comment as its always wonderful for a photographer to see their client not only visiting their blog but leaving some great feedback. Its also a good idea to check out their blog often for great information and even special offers they are running that may not always be advertised elsewhere.

Tagging on Facebook
Why not ask your photographer if they will post some of your session images to Facebook? Most photographers have Facebook pages and would be more than happy to upload and tag you in your session photos. You first need to “friend them” on Facebook and then the Photographer will be able to tag you in the photos. Once you are tagged, those images will automatically show up on your Wall for your own friends to see. Usually the images will be watermarked with the photographers logo or name. Its important to not crop out watermarks as that could be considered copyright infringement. If you want an image cropped a certain way for any reason, just ask your photographer to do that for you.

I’ve also had clients upload the watermarked version of their images to their Facebook page and tag me in them, that works fine too! As long as you are using the web-resolution watermarked images (including a link to my website or blog is awesome too) and then don’t forget to tag me in the image so I can see the ones you post, I always love to see your favorites!

Online Gallery
If you have an online gallery for proofing your session photos, then why not email the link to your “inner circle”? Its another great way to share with friends and family. Make it easy on yourself and let them know if they want to place an order, how they should go about doing that so you won’t be bombarded with email requests. Sometimes they need to order directly through the photographer, or sometimes they can order right through the gallery.

Gift Prints
When you place your session order don’t forget to include a few gift prints. Giving prints to a few special family members or friends is always a great way to share your photographs. Your photographer will likely sell prints a la carte, so think about a set of wallets or a 5″ x 7″ print of your favorite photograph as these are both popular choices.

Buying the Digital Files
Many photographers will offer the digital files at an additional cost, or may even include them as part of their package. You could still run into trouble making personal prints unless you have “Permission to Print”. This is generally something from the photographer allowing you to make prints from the digital files for your own personal use. Their may still be restrictions about distributing the files (either by email or online), so be sure to read their policies.

I want you to be able to share your session photos and try to make it easy for you to do so. If you have any questions, please put them in the comments or send me an email and I’ll post the answer here for everyone.

This session with little Miss A and her parents was fun and a little freezing! She is such a doll, her smile and adorable giggle just make you smile too! She wasn’t happy unless she was on the move and therefore we were on the move right up until the end with a fun little cake smash to celebrate her upcoming first birthday. Too cute and such beautiful blue eyes!
