A Greener Wedding

January 2, 2011

You don’t have to abide by any strict guidelines to make your day greener, each and every way helps. Eco-friendly options can even be less expensive than traditional choices. Here are just a few ideas…

+ Use recycled or tree-free paper for your save-the-dates, invitations, place cards, menus, annoucements and other stationary. Many vendors even offer stationary printed with soy or vegetable based inks.

+ Consider online correspondence and RSVP through your wedding website to cut back on paper.

+ Use recycled, upcycled, used, and/or vintage items. A pre-worn gown, borrowed accessories, vintage decor are great choices and smart ways to save.

+ Look for resuable items as centerpieces, such as potted plants that guests may take home. Instead of paraffin candles, opt for beeswax or soy candles.

+ Rent real dishware, glassware and linens instead of disposables.

+ Make a donation to charity instead of giving favors to your guests. Some charitable organizations will even provide you with a card or a small pin that you can give to guests.

+ Support local and/or organic farmers. Seek out locally-sourced seasonal or organic flowers for table and cake decor. Ask your caterer about organic or locally-sourced food options or even a vegetarian entree (meatless meals have less environmental impact). Choose local or organic wines, liquors and beers for your bar.

+ Look for “Made in the USA”. Domestic goods eliminate the emissions and other environmental costs associated with overseas transport.

+ Keep it natural. Natural materials include biotic materials, such as wood and natural fibers (cotton, silk, linen), and inorganic materials including stone, metal, and clay. Natural makeup and hair products that are non-toxic are good for your body and good for the Earth.

Its easy to be green. If you have any questions or need referrals to green vendors, I would be happy to assist.

Its Good to be Green

April 22, 2010

Being eco-conscious is a necessary investment in our future. I am committed to being a “Green Photographer” and environmentally responsible in my life and in my business. I’m always trying to find ways to be an eco-friendly photographer, here are some of them…

+ My vehicle is a Hybrid
+ My marketing materials are printed on recycled paper
+ I also work with a variety of vendors that are environmentally responsible and provide eco-friendly products
+ I generally try to use my laser printer as much as I can, which uses solid-ink technology (no cartridges!)
+ I reuse and recycle glass, plastic and paper products to reduce waste
+ By not having a studio, it saves valueable resources such as energy and water
+ Only rechargeable batteries are used in my photographic equipment
+ When I do use studio lighting, the bulbs are CFL (Compact Flourescent)
+ I subscribe to an online fax service (electronic PDF’s instead of paper/toner/electricity)
+ I work exclusively on Apple computers (click here to learn more about their efforts)
+ I try to always use renewable resources (environmentally sustainable) & conserve whenever possible
+ Instead of notes, maps, etc. I use my cell phone and in-vehicle GPS for keeping notes & directions
+ Many of my props are second-hand from antique and donation stores
+ Many of the knit hats (I have an extensive collection) are made with natural fibers and all hand-knit in the USA
+ Listed as a green photographer on the Green Bride Guide

Going digital does a lot for the environment.
Being a digital photographer does more than make the process significantly quicker than traditional photography. It also saves on unecessary prints, harsh developing chemicals and excess materials. Clients are encouraged to only order the images they want.

Mother Earth provides for us, so let’s show her some love!
