Today this little one is also one month old and he was just eleven days new for his session. He must have been anxious to see the world because he decided to enter it a bit early, though he is as perfect as can be…with quite the expressive personality (just like his Daddy). Wrapped up in Daddy’s shirt and feeling inspired to give us a great big smile and his best “Blue Steel” impression…nicely done. While his Daddy was out to sea, this little guy spent a lot of time snuggled in his shirt, such a sweet way to keep Daddy around at all times. When it came time for a few photos with Mommy he gave us “two thumbs up” which really made my day and then a little grin.

Today he is exactly one month old, but when I met this handsome fellow for his session he was only 5 days new. I just love the bit of humor a sock monkey hat adds to a photo…it makes me giggle every time I look at it. At the end of his session he smiled for Mommy and snuggled with Daddy, so sweet!

The couple from the maternity session just a few weeks ago welcomed their baby boy a bit early. Well, quite a bit early…but at least Daddy was able to watch his son be born via Skype (he was deployed at the time). So of course, he did smile during his session…this one is for Daddy :)

Newborn Session + Favorites

December 21, 2010

After a little awake time, this little one drifted off again and I was able to get some all snuggled up…that is until she decided she didn’t like being bundled anymore. Then a smile, a yawn, and the cutest little wrinkles.

More to share of this little charmer…her dark hair and pale pink lips are so adorable. Talk about rosy cozy cuteness!

This little lady had two requirements for her session: having a full belly and being tightly swaddled; the moment I tried to unbundle her she let me know that wasn’t going to work for her. Hehe. Only four days old and this little lady knows exactly what she wants, and how can you look at her sweet little face and not give her just that? So I swaddled her in yellow and she drifted off to sleep. More to share soon!

You may remember this sweetheart from her sneak peek a couple weeks ago. She had such delicate details and beautiful blue eyes…little Miss A was awake most of the session but I waited it out to catch a few sleepy photos and wanted to show some of my favorites from the session. How quickly we forget just how tiny their fingers were or the way their toes looked when they are so new…which is why newborn photography is so special.

She would have been pretty in pink…but I think she looks beautiful in black & white. Here’s a sneak peek of Baby A – and even though she was too interested in having her picture taken than sleeping, I did get a few of her in dreamland with more to share soon. Oh, and go Cornhuskers! ;)

I wanted to share some more of my favorites from little P’s session. Oh how I love newborn sessions….soooo cute!

Newborns in the buff photograph the best as I’ll be able to capture all the delicate details of your litte one. By being bare it highlights their innocence and newness to the world. However I do make it a point to hide certain “areas” to keep every image tasteful and appropriate. Just remember to dress your baby in something loose fitting and easy to take off so that we won’t disturb their slumber right before the shoot. Also make sure you put the diaper on loose beforehand too to avoid any diaper marks. No need to worry about your little one being cold – if you adjust the room temperature to be at least 74 degrees combined with the heating pad I use, they will stay nice and warm. (A space heater is also helpful which I can bring if needed.)

I do bring along a few props, such as throws & blankets, containers, various hats (which are really fun for a few images) and other items to add some color and texture into your images – though who can resist the simplicity of newborn baby skin? I love to include personal items such as an important blanket or a sentimental toy of your own because it can make the photograph extra special to you and your family.

Now that we have your newborn figured out…on to you! In general, a plain black or neutral t-shirt or tank paired with dark denim jeans or black yoga pants are great for mom. A plain black t-shirt or long sleeve shirt with dark denim jeans are a good option for dad. Since we’ll likely be inside your house and it’s going to be nice and warm, bare feet works best. But if you plan on wearing socks, please make sure they are a similar color to your pants. If siblings will be included in a couple of the images, just remember to keep it simple…neutral colors keep the focus to the connection between those in the photograph.

If you have any questions, please put them in the comments or send me an email and I’ll post the answer here for everyone.
